Senior Government Lawyer within Exciting Commonwealth Department

Allygroup is looking to fill an exciting opportunity for a senior government lawyer with EL2/SES-level Commonwealth experience to join an exciting new venture within a high-profile government department. This is a secondment opportunity for a 6-month initial term, with a potential for a further six-month extension. Remote work is available for the right candidates. The proposed commencement date is 2 June 2025.

A baseline security clearance is mandatory to be considered for this role.

Our ideal candidates:

  • Experienced legal practitioner with a minimum of six years post post-admission experience.

  • Hold a current practising certificate issued by the Law Society of the ACT or in their state or territory of residence.

  • Have previous Commonwealth legal experience.

  • Demonstrated expertise in regulatory oversight or enforcement.

  • Possessed knowledge or experience in the Murray-Darling Basin Authority / Water Law is highly desirable.

  • Have regulatory enforcement litigation experience is highly valued.

  • Be skilled in developing and delivering structured legal training on legal roles, powers, and delegations.

Key duties include:

  • Providing legal advice on a broad range of issues including statutory interpretation and administrative law, regulatory actions, inquiries, investigations and corporate matters.

  • Managing litigation across a broad range of matters including judicial review and regulatory enforcement, in a range of jurisdictions.

  • Advising on legal risk and mitigation strategies, particularly in areas of novel or complex work.

  • Developing legal guidance resources and delivering legal training to the stakeholders.

  • Assisting with Freedom of Information requests and providing privacy advice.

Engaging with internal clients and external stakeholders, including external legal providers in relation to requests for specialised legal assistance on tied constitutional law issues.
