Freedom of Information (FOI) Lawyer

Allygroup is seeking two experienced FOI Lawyers to support a federal government agency during a period of increased Freedom of Information (FOI) activity.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a high-performing team and contribute to complex and significant FOI matters within the Australian Government. You will work on a diverse range of information access requests, provide specialist advice on FOI legislation, and support high-quality, legally sound decision-making in a dynamic environment.

These roles are available on an initial three-month contract with a further three-month extension option and are expected to commence as soon as possible.

The preferred location is Canberra, although other locations may be considered for candidates with the right skills and experience.

We are particularly interested in candidates with 2-5 years of post-admission experience (PAE) and demonstrated experience in centralised FOI decision-making environments.

The successful candidates will be required to hold a minimum Baseline security clearance and perform functions necessary for managing requests made under the Freedom of Information Act 1982.

Who are we looking for?

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Admission as a legal practitioner in Australia.

  • Between 2-5 years' PAE, ideally gained within government, regulatory or administrative law environments.

  • Demonstrated experience managing FOI matters within a centralised FOI decision-making framework.

  • Strong understanding of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 and administrative decision-making principles, or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.

  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation to complex and sensitive matters.

  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear, concise and legally robust decisions and advice.

  • Strong analytical, research and problem-solving capabilities.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver quality outcomes within tight timeframes.

  • Well-developed stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to build productive working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

  • High attention to detail and a commitment to delivering accurate, consistent and high-quality work.

  • Sound judgement, professionalism and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
