Senior Legislation Lawyer (EL1 equivalent or higher)
Allygroup is seeking an experienced Legislation Lawyer with a strong background in legislative development and reform to support high-profile legislative development projects within the department’s Legal Division. This is a secondment opportunity commencing in early August 2026 and continuing through to 30 June 2027.
Candidates must be Australian citizens and either hold, or be eligible to obtain, a Baseline security clearance.
Canberra-based candidates who are available to work on a full-time basis are preferred. However, remote working arrangements and part-time hours will be considered for the right candidate. The candidate must be able to work onsite for at least two-thirds or their time.
Our ideal candidates:
Minimum of five years PAE
Experience in preparing drafting instructions
Experience drafting Explanatory Memorandum and explanatory Statements
Demonstrate strong analytical skills and attention to detail
Experience providing legal advice within short timeframes, including complex analysis presented in a way that is easy for clients to understand
Experience in the development of primary and subordinate legislation, including drafting processes, preparation of explanatory materials, familiarity with parliamentary processes, and responding to parliamentary committee scrutiny
Previous APS experience, including familiarity with obligations under the Legal Services Directions 2025, and any experience in biosecurity or export control law and/or cost recovery, is desirable
