Senior Associate - Legislative Drafting & Reform

Allygroup is seeking an experienced Senior Associate-level lawyer with strong expertise in legislative drafting, legislative design, and regulatory reform to support the delivery of complex legislative and regulatory reform initiatives.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to significant legislative projects, working alongside legal, policy, and technical stakeholders to deliver meaningful reform outcomes. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development and implementation of legislative frameworks, providing strategic legal advice and support throughout the policy and legislative process.

This engagement is offered for an initial three-month term, with the potential for extension. Canberra-based candidates are preferred; however, flexible and remote working arrangements will be considered for suitably qualified candidates.

Due to the anticipated immediate commencement, a Baseline security clearance is highly desirable. Security clearance sponsorship may also be available for suitably qualified candidates.

Key responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Developing high-quality legislative drafting instructions for parliamentary drafters

  • Reviewing and analysing draft legislation to ensure legal accuracy and alignment with policy objectives

  • Preparing explanatory materials, regulatory documents, briefing papers, and supporting legal analysis

  • Coordinating engagement across legal, policy, regulatory, and subject matter expert teams

  • Supporting decision-makers through complex legislative and regulatory processes

  • Contributing to policy development to ensure legislative coherence and effective implementation outcomes

  • Providing legal advice on public law and administrative law matters

  • Managing external legal service providers where required

  • Maintaining accurate records and knowledge management practices

  • Mentoring junior lawyers and supporting capability development within legal teams

Our ideal candidate

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Significant experience in legislative design, legislative drafting processes, and preparing drafting instructions

  • A strong understanding of parliamentary, cabinet, and regulatory decision-making processes

  • Experience working on complex legislative or regulatory reform programs

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and collaboration skills

  • The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong analytical, drafting, and problem-solving skills

  • Admission as a legal practitioner in Australia

Highly regarded

  • Experience working on regulatory reform, economic reform, infrastructure, resources, energy, or other complex policy initiatives

  • Exposure to public sector legal environments

  • Qualifications or experience in economics, public policy, or regulatory frameworks
