EOI - Employment Lawyers

Are you an employment lawyer or legally trained professional looking to build or advance your career within the Australian Public Service? We are seeking Expressions of Interest from candidates at APS4 through to EL2 equivalent levels for a range of Federal Government employment and workplace relations law roles.

These opportunities allow you to contribute to nationally significant workforce, safety, and compliance matters while working with experienced legal teams across Commonwealth agencies.

About the opportunities

Our Federal Government clients regularly require employment law specialists across multiple levels. Duties vary depending on classification, but may include:

APS4-APS5

  • Conducting legal research and preparing briefs and case summaries on employment, workplace relations and WHS matters

  • Assisting with case management, evidence collation and responses to internal reviews or disputes

  • Drafting correspondence, preliminary advice, and administrative documents

  • Supporting senior lawyers on Fair Work Commission proceedings, code‑of‑conduct matters, and APS employment law processes

APS6

  • Managing lower‑complexity employment law matters under supervision

  • Preparing draft advice, show‑cause materials, termination documentation and responses to employment‑related complaints

  • Undertaking statutory interpretation across the Fair Work Act, Public Service Act and related legislative frameworks

  • Liaising with HR, internal stakeholders, investigators and external counsel

EL1-EL2

  • Leading complex and sensitive matters, including workplace disputes, misconduct investigations and enterprise agreement interpretation

  • Providing high‑level strategic legal advice to senior executives and decision‑makers

  • Overseeing case strategy, risk assessment and compliance with Commonwealth employment frameworks

  • Managing teams, mentoring junior staff and briefing counsel

  • Representing the agency in mediations, conferences and Fair Work Commission proceedings (where appropriate)

Our ideal candidates

We are interested in candidates who have:

  • Demonstrated experience working within, or advising, the Australian Federal Government

  • Strong understanding of Commonwealth employment frameworks, including the Fair Work Act, Public Service Act, enterprise agreements and APS Code of Conduct processes

  • Excellent research, drafting and analytical skills

  • Strong judgement, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities

  • Baseline, NV1, NV2 or PV clearance is highly desirable (or the ability to obtain a clearance)
