Allygroup is seeking an experienced Privacy Lawyer with a minimum of eight years’ experience advising on Commonwealth privacy law. The secondee will be embedded within the Legal Services Group, supporting complex and varied privacy matters. This includes interpreting and applying the Privacy Act 1988, conducting investigations in response to privacy incidents, managing related claims, and contributing to the development and refinement of privacy policies and practices.
Location
The secondment is initially set for three months, with the possibility of up to two additional three-month extensions. This is a full-time secondment based at offices in Sydney/Melbourne/Canberra, with immediate commencement preferred.
The successful candidate must work in person at the Sydney/Melbourne/Canberra offices. Please note that hybrid working arrangements are not offered for this position.
Eligibility
Applicants must be Australian citizens, be qualified as a Lawyer with a minimum of eight years’ experience working on privacy matters, and hold a baseline security clearance.
Candidate Requirements
Minimum 8 years' experience advising on privacy law within a government or regulatory context
Extensive understanding of the Privacy Act 1988 and related frameworks
Strong analytical skills, legal drafting ability and investigative experience
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective stakeholder engagement
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary legal team
Preference will be given to candidates holding a government security clearance (Baseline or above), or those willing to obtain one
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic and practical advice under the Privacy Act 1988 and related legislation
Conduct legal investigations in response to privacy incidents, breaches or complaints
Manage privacy-related claims and assist in resolving matters with internal and external stakeholders
Draft, review and refine privacy policies and internal guidance materials
Support cross-team collaboration to ensure consistent application of privacy obligations
Contribute to privacy capability through mentoring, training and procedural input
Work effectively within systems for matter management, workflow, and legal quality assurance
