FOI Advisor in a High-Profile Government Department

Allygroup is seeking two FOI Advisers to support the FOI team within a high-profile Commonwealth Government Department. This is a secondment opportunity for an initial 12-month period.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with a team of highly skilled professionals and contribute to diverse, multi-disciplinary projects.

A minimum NV1 security clearance is required for this position.


Key responsibilities:

  • Process Freedom of Information (FOI) requests and internal review applications in accordance with the FOI Act and relevant internal procedures;

  • Manage external reviews of FOI decisions by oversight bodies, including the preparation of written submissions;

  • Provide expert legal and strategic advice on a broad range of complex and high-profile FOI matters to senior stakeholders across government;

  • Liaise and collaborate with key stakeholders, including other government departments and agencies;

  • Conduct research on complex topics and present findings in clear, concise, and well-structured written formats.

Our ideal candidates:

  • Apply in-depth knowledge of FOI and administrative law, including relevant precedents and principles, to matters involving complexity and sensitivity;

  • Conduct complex analysis, solve problems, and deliver timely, fit-for-purpose advice on nuanced FOI issues;

  • Demonstrate advanced written and verbal communication skills;

  • Maintain a strong client and stakeholder focus while working effectively in sensitive and high-pressure environments;

  • Bring demonstrated experience in providing FOI advice and/or managing FOI processes.

  • Legal qualifications are valued but not essential where practical FOI experience is demonstrated.
