Allygroup is seeking an Assistant Director at EL1 level, for a 6-month labour-hire arrangement with the possibility of extending further 6 months in a high-performing government agency. The proposed commencement date is 5 July 2025.
Successful candidates will work in the Privacy, Legislation and Assurance Section with the opportunity to further legal knowledge and provide advice to the department and portfolio agencies on the management of legislative change.
Candidates must be Australian citizens, based in Canberra, available to work full-time at the Barton office, and hold an NV1 clearance. Transfer under section 26 of the Public Service Act 1999 is available for the role.
Key duties:
Performing the role of Legislation Liaison Officer for the department.
Supporting the department’s achievement of its strategic policy objectives by providing expert advice to policy areas on technical practices and procedures relating to the legislation process.
Supervising a small number of other staff and ensuring quality outputs.
Leading the coordination of bids and bid variations for legislation (both Bills and legislative instruments) for the portfolio, ensuring that bids are in the standard format.
Taking a proactive approach to keeping the related changes to the legislation programme and other matters related to the programme.
Developing and managing other key stakeholder relationships.
Monitoring the progress of bills in the Parliament and communicating updates.
Coordinating requests for comment on draft legislation and other reform projects.
Monitoring legislation that is of portfolio interest and updating the Ministers’ Offices on status.
Supporting team’s legal assurance and privacy governance functions, including the annual Legal Assurance Framework Process, and advice for the Secretary and other senior executives on legal risk management and legal assurance across the department.
Skills and Experience
Bachelor of Laws degree (or equivalent) from a recognised tertiary education provider.
Admitted as a legal practitioner.
Experience in a role managing legislative change, and expertise in the associated practices and procedures.
Knowledge of or experience in providing legal advice on complex problems, drafting legal documents, providing practical legal solutions for clients, conducting legal research.
Excellent analytical and communication skills, good judgement and discretion.
Proven experience in stakeholder management and capacity to promote the department’s policy objectives through relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
The ability to work independently under broad direction, supervise or mentor junior staff, and prioritise within tight deadlines.
