Senior Information and Employment Lawyer
Allygroup is seeking experienced Senior Lawyers (EL1 equivalent) to support a high-performing legal team providing advice on privacy, freedom of information (FOI), information disclosure, and employment law matters.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on a broad range of information and employment law issues, supporting complex legal matters across a dynamic government environment. The successful candidates will provide strategic legal advice, manage FOI matters, and work closely with internal stakeholders to deliver practical and legally sound outcomes.
The opportunity
This engagement is offered for an initial six-month term, commencing as soon as possible in September 2026, with the potential for extension.
Canberra-based candidates are preferred, with an expectation of working on-site at least three days per week. However, flexible and remote working arrangements will be considered for suitably qualified candidates. Part-time and job-share arrangements may also be considered.
Due to the nature of the work, a current Baseline security clearance is mandatory.
Key Responsibilities:
Providing legal advice on privacy, information disclosure, FOI, and employment law matters
Managing and processing FOI requests, including document review, redaction, drafting decisions, and providing related legal advice
Advising on privacy incidents, privacy complaints, and privacy compliance obligations
Providing employment law advice across a range of workplace matters
Supporting investigations, workplace conduct matters, and public interest disclosure processes
Providing advice on information sharing and information management obligations
Participating in client meetings and presenting clear, practical legal advice
Engaging with internal stakeholders and external parties on information, privacy, and employment-related matters
Preparing legal analysis, briefing materials, and written advice
Contributing to the achievement of legal and operational outcomes within a collaborative team environment
Our ideal candidate
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
EL1-equivalent capability with a minimum of five years post-admission experience
Experience providing legal advice on privacy, FOI, employment law, or information law matters
Strong legal research, analysis, and drafting skills
The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality advice within tight timeframes
Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
The ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear and practical advice
Admission as a legal practitioner in Australia
Highly regarded
Experience processing FOI requests, including drafting decisions and reviewing documents for release
Experience advising on privacy incidents, privacy complaints, and regulatory obligations
Employment law experience, including workplace investigations, employee entitlements, and workplace disputes
Experience working within Australian Government or public sector legal environments
Expertise in one or more of the team's specialist practice areas, including privacy, FOI, information law, or employment law
Requirements
A current Baseline security clearance (or higher) is mandatory
The successful candidate must be willing to comply with all relevant Australian Government protective security requirements
The successful candidate must adhere to all applicable information, personnel, and physical security obligations associated with the engagement
