Allygroup is seeking an experienced Employment and Work, Health and Safety (WHS) lawyer for an initial 12-month secondment opportunity within a high-profile federal government agency.

This opportunity is ideal for a senior practitioner who enjoys complex advisory work, fast‑paced environments, and making a meaningful contribution to public sector outcomes.

The opportunity

You will join a specialist in-house legal team providing strategic advice across employment, WHS and integrity matters. Working closely with senior stakeholders, this role offers exposure to complex and sensitive issues within a large and diverse organisation.

The engagement is available on a full-time or part-time basis (minimum of three days per week). Applicants must be Australian citizens, Canberra-based, and possess a valid NV1 security clearance or higher to be considered.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide strategic and practical advice on WHS matters, including engagement with regulators and responses to inspections and inquiries

  • Deliver high-quality advice across a broad range of employment law matters, including overseeing and managing contentious issues and litigation

  • Act as a trusted adviser in responding to claims, complaints and external review processes involving oversight and integrity bodies

  • Support complex operational and integrity matters, including conflicts of interest, public interest disclosures and referrals to external integrity agencies

  • Review and second-counsel advice prepared by junior lawyers to ensure accuracy, consistency and best practice

  • Play a key role in mentoring and developing junior lawyers, contributing to capability uplift across the legal function

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • 7+ years’ post-qualification experience in employment and/or WHS law, with exposure to complex advisory and contentious matters

  • Experience working in the Commonwealth or public sector, or a proven ability to deliver effective in‑house advice within large, complex organisations

  • A strong capability to translate complex legal issues into clear, practical and solution-focused advice for senior stakeholders

  • The adaptability and judgement required to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to build credibility and strong working relationships across diverse stakeholder groups

In return, we offer:

  • Impactful work: Contribute to strategic employment and WHS advice for a major Commonwealth agency

  • Professional growth: Senior‑level secondment with meaningful responsibility

  • Supportive environment: Work within a collaborative and respected legal team

  • Competitive remuneration: Attractive market‑aligned package
