Allygroup is seeking an experienced Employment and Work, Health and Safety (WHS) lawyer for an initial 12-month secondment opportunity within a high-profile federal government agency.
This opportunity is ideal for a senior practitioner who enjoys complex advisory work, fast‑paced environments, and making a meaningful contribution to public sector outcomes.
The opportunity
You will join a specialist in-house legal team providing strategic advice across employment, WHS and integrity matters. Working closely with senior stakeholders, this role offers exposure to complex and sensitive issues within a large and diverse organisation.
The engagement is available on a full-time or part-time basis (minimum of three days per week). Applicants must be Australian citizens, Canberra-based, and possess a valid NV1 security clearance or higher to be considered.
In this role, you will:
Provide strategic and practical advice on WHS matters, including engagement with regulators and responses to inspections and inquiries
Deliver high-quality advice across a broad range of employment law matters, including overseeing and managing contentious issues and litigation
Act as a trusted adviser in responding to claims, complaints and external review processes involving oversight and integrity bodies
Support complex operational and integrity matters, including conflicts of interest, public interest disclosures and referrals to external integrity agencies
Review and second-counsel advice prepared by junior lawyers to ensure accuracy, consistency and best practice
Play a key role in mentoring and developing junior lawyers, contributing to capability uplift across the legal function
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
7+ years’ post-qualification experience in employment and/or WHS law, with exposure to complex advisory and contentious matters
Experience working in the Commonwealth or public sector, or a proven ability to deliver effective in‑house advice within large, complex organisations
A strong capability to translate complex legal issues into clear, practical and solution-focused advice for senior stakeholders
The adaptability and judgement required to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Well-developed interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to build credibility and strong working relationships across diverse stakeholder groups
