Allygroup is seeking an experienced legislation lawyer with a strong background in legislative development and reform to undertake a secondment within a large federal government's Legislation and Training Legal Branch.
The engagement will run from February 2026 to June 2026. Full-time or part-time arrangements will be considered; however, the secondee must be able to work onsite for at least two-thirds of the time.
Roles and responsibilities
Develop and review primary and subordinate legislation to support the department’s legislative program.
Prepare drafting instructions for the Office of Parliamentary Counsel and liaise with drafters throughout the process.
Draft Explanatory Memoranda, Explanatory Statements, and other supporting legislative documentation.
Provide high‑quality legal advice on legislative frameworks, statutory interpretation, and legislative reform matters.
Support legislative reform projects by working closely with policy and program areas.
Prepare responses to parliamentary committee scrutiny, including Senate and Joint Committee inquiries.
Conduct legal and legislative research to support policy development and decision‑making.
Produce accurate work under short timeframes while maintaining strong attention to detail.
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to support legislative processes.
Relevant experience
Ideally, EL1-equivalent level or higher, with a minimum of 5 years’ post‑admission experience.
Strong experience in the development of primary and subordinate legislation, drafting processes, preparation of explanatory materials, familiarity with parliamentary processes, and responding to parliamentary committee scrutiny.
Experience providing legal advice within short timeframes is preferred.
Previous APS experience, including familiarity with obligations under the Legal Services Directions 2017, is desirable.

Preference for the secondee to be based onsite, Canberra ACT.
