Allygroup is seeking an specialist lawyer with a minimum of three years’ PQE in AI and ICT to undertake a secondment within a large federal government department’s Legal Framework & Digital Law team. The engagement will run from March to June 2026 on a part‑time basis, with a minimum commitment of two days per week.
The team provides legal advice on whole‑of‑government legal frameworks, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI). It plays a key role in supporting the Australian Government’s responsible adoption of AI by advising on policy implementation and ensuring legal risks are well understood across agencies.
Roles and responsibilities
Advise on AI use cases across the department.
Support implementation of key Australian Government AI policies, including the Policy for the Responsible Use of AI in Government and the AI Plan for the APS.
Provide legal advice on the department’s adoption of AI technologies in service delivery, scientific work, and corporate functions.
Prepare legal advice and conduct legal and policy research.
Engage with internal clients to understand operational needs and risks.
Advise on automated decision‑making (ADM) issues where relevant.
Work independently within a small team, demonstrating strong judgement and autonomy.
Relevant Experience
EL1‑equivalent lawyer with a minimum of three years’ post‑admission experience in AI and ICT.
Demonstrated experience advising on AI use cases, ADM, and familiarity with Australian Government AI policies (highly regarded).
Previous APS experience, including knowledge of the Legal Services Directions 2017, is desirable.

Preference for the secondee to work on‑site in Canberra; remote arrangements may be considered for the right candidate
