Litigation Lawyer (Baseline-clearance required)

Allygroup is seeking an experienced Associate or Senior Associate with a strong background in complex litigation to support a high-profile Commonwealth department. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to significant legal matters within a dynamic and results-driven environment. Engagements will be for an initial six-month term, with the possibility of two six-month extension options. A Baseline (or higher) security clearance is required.

The successful candidate will work closely with an integrated legal team comprising government lawyers, paralegals, contracted lawyers, and administrative staff. You will gain valuable exposure to senior stakeholders and experienced counsel, including General Counsel.

You will be working on a diverse range of litigation and dispute resolution matters, including civil claims, personal injury, compensation, debt recovery, commercial disputes, and administrative law challenges. The role also involves responding to court orders such as subpoenas and summonses, and supporting the department’s involvement in coronial inquests and work health and safety actions.

The role is located in Canberra on a full-time basis. Occasional travel may be required, with all travel expenses covered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing a broad range of claims including contractual disputes, personal injury, work health and safety matters (including prosecutions), judicial review, debt recovery, and compensation.

  • Responding to subpoenas, summonses, legislative and police requests, and search warrants.

  • Handling common law compensation claims relating to alleged historical abuse.

  • Managing claims related to historical contamination.

  • Supporting litigation and related activities across various jurisdictions.

About You:

  • Minimum of two years’ post-admission experience.

  • Proven experience in litigation and dispute resolution, ideally within or for government.

  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities under tight deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
