Allygroup is seeking an experienced Freedom of Information (FOI) professional or lawyer to join a high-performing legal team within a Commonwealth government agency. This secondment offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the delivery of FOI services in a dynamic regulatory environment, supporting transparency and accountability across government operations.
Role overview
The secondee will report to the Corporate Counsel – Information and Data Law and will be responsible for independently managing a complex caseload of FOI matters. The role requires adherence to internal systems for workflow and quality assurance, and active collaboration across legal and operational teams.
This is a full-time secondment opportunity, with four-day-per-week arrangements considered. The role is based in Canberra, Sydney, or Melbourne, though other capital city locations may be considered. The initial term is three months, with the potential for up to two further three-month extensions.
Key responsibilities
Manage complex FOI matters independently, including decision-making, internal/external reviews, and reporting.
Provide strategic advice and coordinate guidance on FOI and related legal issues.
Draft clear and defensible FOI decisions and written submissions for review processes.
Operate within established systems for matter management and quality assurance.
Build strong working relationships with internal teams, third parties, and stakeholders.
Support capability development and mentorship within the legal team.
Candidate requirements
Minimum of eight years’ experience in Commonwealth FOI matters.
Proven ability to lead complex matters and provide strategic FOI or legal advice.
Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
Experience negotiating with third parties and managing competing interests.
Capacity to contribute to team development and knowledge sharing.
Legal qualifications are preferred but not essential. Non-legal FOI professionals are encouraged to apply.
Must be an Australian citizen and hold (or be willing to obtain) a Baseline security clearance.
